Service Centre Officer

Farming Connect


Farming Connect is a high profile, integrated project which supplies focussed training, support and advice, delivered through a pan-Wales programme of knowledge transfer activities, specialist advice and support for innovation. A key objective is to increase the emphasis on business-focused    behaviour,    therefore    improving    profitability,    competitiveness    and environmental performance of farm, forestry and food businesses in Wales.


Farming Connect is funded through the Rural Development Plan 2014 -2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.


Aim of the Role

To ensure the effective day to day operation of the Farming Connect Service Centre, ensuring that the Service Centre’s procedures and systems run smoothly at all times through regular monitoring. This will include responsibility for regularly checking systems and ensuring accuracy by Service Centre staff by providing training as necessary.  


Main Responsibilities

  • Support the Managers in the day to day running of the Service Centre

  • Act as a point of contact for clients wishing to use Farming Connect’s services and ensure that all enquiries are dealt with

  • Register or validate client details to ensure that they are eligible to access services through the systems

  • Accurately input data and confidently deal with matters relating to the systems

  • Ensure the efficiency of the Service Centre by providing training on the system for the team

  • Work closely with the Managers to monitor accuracy

  • Develop a broad understanding of the system and be able to extract data and create reports at the request of the Managers

  • Act as the first point of contact within the Service Centre regarding matters relating to the Lifelong Learning and Development programme

  • Process applications and send approvals for some of the Knowledge Transfer Programme, but mainly for the Lifelong Learning and Development Programme

  • Promote all Farming Connect activities, providing excellent information regarding the programme on a local, regional and national level to lead clients through the relevant processes

  • Be responsible for creating, coordinating and operating effective systems and processes in line with relevant Audit requirements

  • Monitor, review and report on the system’s results in a timely and accurate manner to the Operations Manager in line with Welsh Government contract requirements

  • Act as a contact point for Lantra relating to client enquiries



  • Ensure standards for customer service, quality, equality and diversity, health and safety and biosecurity are met

  • Accept other reasonable duties and responsibilities as required

  • Represent Menter a Busnes as required


Skills and Experience



  • Educated to at least NVQ level 3 or above or demonstrable experience of working in a related field

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Good organisational, coordination and time management skills and excellent general administration skills

  • Excellent IT skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, databases, email and the web

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Able to be proactive and drive things forward effectively

  • Able to work to tight deadlines

  • Excellent bilingual communication skills (oral and written)

  • Able to maintain teamwork, quality and consistency in administration processes by working closely with the team, maintaining attention to detail

  • Experience of creating clear, accurate and detailed reports that are relevant to the intended audience

  • Enthusiastic about the Rural Department’s work

  • Self-motivated and able to take responsibility for setting and reviewing priorities in order to achieve his/her own goals and workload, taking consideration of the needs of the customer

  • Able to produce qualitative and quantitative reports

  • Experience of working to targets, both individually and as part of a team, with a clear focus on quality.

  • Able to work as an individual or as part of a team

  • Experience of working with databases/client management systems



  • Demonstrable experience in a supervisory role
  • Knowledge of the Farming Connect programme
